Rijiju, Gogoi pay tributes to slain SP, PSO

GUWAHATI, June 7 � Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today paid tributes to Superintendent of Police of Hamren police district Nitya Nanda Goswami and his personal security officer Ratul Nunisa who died in an encounter with KPLT militants on Thursday.

Rijiju arrived from New Delhi around 10.30 am and then joined the Chief Minister and other senior civil and police officials at the 4th Assam Police Battalion at Kahilipara where arrangements for tribute-paying were made by the State police.

After paying floral tributes to the departed soul, both Rijiju and Gogoi met the family members of the deceased policemen present there.

Rijiju also had a meeting with the Chief Minister and the Director General of Assam Police later in the day, where the overall law-and-order scenario was reviewed.

Governor JB Patnaik, while expressing his deep shock and anguish at the killing of Goswami and Nunisa, condemned such incidents of unwarranted violence and termed those as acts of cowardice. He also conveyed his profound condolences to the members of the bereaved families, an official release said.

Union Joint Secretary (Home) Shambu Singh, Chief Secretary Jitesh Khosla and Director General of Assam Police Khagen Sarma were among those present to pay tribute to the slain policemen.

While the mortal remains of Nitya Nanda Goswami were taken to his Beltola house from the APBn campus, the body of Ratul Nunisa was taken to his village in Karbi Anglong.

The last rites of Goswami were performed at the Navagraha crematorium.

The APS Officers� Association and the All Assam Students� Union, have also condemned the killings.

Meanwhile, the family of Goswami has demanded a CBI probe, suspecting a conspiracy behind the killings.

Wife of the slain SP, Rakhi Goswami, said, �I want justice. I want to know how only two of the 18 member team that was part of the operation died and rest mange to escape.

�An immediate and impartial probe is what I demand. The responsibility must be fixed,� she told mediapersons at the 4th Assam Police Battalion campus.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has ordered suspension of four personal security officers of the SP who had allegedly deserted Goswami.
