Rights panel makes school withdraw girls expulsion letter

By City Correspondent

GUWAHATI, April 25 - Following intervention by the Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (ASCPCR), a city-based private school has decided to withdraw the expulsion letter issued to a minor student.

According to a statement issued by the ASCPCR, the private school in question, as per media reports, had allegedly expelled the seven-year-old girl student for being a slow learner and failing to secure better grades in her class.

The father of the girl has sought a written apology from the authorities of the school, which called him for further discussion toward re-admitting his daughter. The school Principal said the child was not expelled and the authorities had only mentioned its possibility to her parents. The father, unwilling to put his child back in the school, said he took up the matter with the Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights in March, besides approaching an NGO, the statement said.

The ASCPCR, after receiving the complaint, immediately acted on the matter and sent out a clear instruction and recommendation to the school authorities to withdraw the expulsion order of the child along with a copy of the same to the CBSE. The CBSE and the school authorities responded immediately to the Commissions instructions.

After going through the childs school performance report and the facts mentioned in the complaint letter, the Commission instructed the school to immediately promote her to Class I.

With reference to ASCPCRs recommendation letter, the school authorities eventually decided to promote the girl to Class I and notified the same to the ASCPCR.

Child rights activist Miguel Das Queah was the first to bring the issue to the notice of the authorities through a social media post, after which the issue drew sharp reactions from various quarters.
