Rights body plea to President

By ANN Service

NILAMBAZAR, May 21 - The Citizens Rights Protection Co-ordination Committee (CRPCC) has urged the President of India to give opportunities to those declared as foreigners to prove their citizenship and give directions to stop the arrest of such persons ex parte by the foreigners tribunals.

In a memorandum, the CRPCC has also demanded a stop to the forwarding of fresh cases against the D voters by the border police to the foreigners tribunal. They mentioned that the border police has filed cases against bonafide citizens of India without proper enquiry. Maximum cases have been disposed of as ex parte by the tribunals due to the non-appearance of the second party, it alleged.

It also alleged that the maximum number of those declared as foreigners did not get any opportunity to prove their citizenship before the tribunals due non-service of summons through the available records. Now the direction of arrest of those declared as foreigners has created an environment of panic in the Barak valley, it added.

Advocate Arunangsu Bhattacharjee, Nandan Kumar Nath, Piklu Das, Tushar Deb, Sunit Ranjan Dutta and others submitted the memorandum to the President through the Deputy Commissioner, Karimganj recently.
