Rights body asks police to keep tab on persons employing child labour

GUWAHATI, Oct 16 - After reviewing the aspects of safety and protection of street children in Assam, the Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has recommended to the Assam Police to keep a tab and register cases against the persons who have employed child labour or have engaged children in any way for begging, selling or buying tobacco and psychotropic substances, under the provision of the JJ Act, 2015.

The Commission has also requested the child protection units to collaborate with the merchant associations for larger awareness over the issue.

The child rights body has ordered a quick survey to establish the number of children on the streets and it would issue specific recommendations after the survey report is received.

The Commission conducted a review of the situation in all the districts of Assam through webinars in three phases on October 13, 14 and 15, covering 11 districts per day.

The meetings were led by its chairpersons Dr Sunita Changkakoti and members Dr Pilu Hazarika, Rupa Hazarika, Ajoy Kumar Dutta and Naba Bujarbaruah.

Dr Chiranjeev Kakoty, director of NESPYM, Debadrita Sengupta of Save the Children, and Jitul Borah, DCPO of Hailakandi attended the web sessions as experts.
