By STAFF correspondent

SHILLONG, June 5 - Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday said that his State has tremendous resources and is waiting for the right investments.

Realising the huge potential in the State, the Government has initiated various programmes on a mission mode to add value to the available resources, Sangma informed the 15th Finance Commission. He highlighted the challenges before the State owing to its international border, terrain and remoteness. The international border the State shares is often seen as a problem, but it can open up opportunities for trade and commerce, he added.

The Chief Minister also said that the ban on coal mining in 2014 has had a huge impact on revenue and has also affected other allied sectors. Acknowledging the challenges in the Health and Education sectors, Sangma informed the Commission that around 30 lakh of the population will be covered under the Meghalaya Health Insurance Scheme.

The Chief Minister said that the year 2022 is very important for the State as it will celebrate its 50th year of Statehood and the National Games will also be held in the same year.
