Rickshawpuller killed in Manipur blast

IMPHAL, Nov 30 � One rickshawpuller was killed and two women were hurt when a powerful bomb exploded near the entrance of a crowded festival site here this morning.

The incident occurred around 11am near the entrance gate of the ongoing Manipur Sangai Festival venue at Hafta Kangjeibung ground in Manipur�s Imphal East district.

Police identified the deceased rickshawpuller as Md Kora who hailed from Mayang Imphal Irong in Imphal West district and presently resided in a rented house at Hatta here. He was paid Rs 20 by a suspected militant of Kangleipak Communist Party (MC) to leave the bomb at the festival site, police said.

Police suspect the hand of KCP (MC) behind the explosion. However, no armed group in Manipur has claimed responsibility for the incident till the filing of this report.

Kora, whose both legs were blown up during the explosion succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital while the injured women were sent to a hospital for treatment. Both were said to be out of danger.

The blast site is about 60 metres away from the City Convention Centre, which is scheduled to be inaugurated by the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh in his December 3 visit.

Manipur Governor Gurbachan Jagat along with State Tourism Minister TN Haokip, Assembly Speaker I Hemochandra and Manipur Pradesh Congress committee president Gaikhangam and others attended the concluding ceremony of the Manipur Sangai festival today.

Meanwhile, the ongoing three-day-long general strike called by a militant group continues to affect movement of vehicles on Manipur highways besides partially affecting normal life today.

The general strike by the Kangleipak Communist Party (MC) protesting the killing of one of its cadres in an alleged fake encounter, has partially affected normal life.
