Rich tributes paid to Sardar Patel

GUWAHATI, Oct 31 - Along with the rest of the country, the Rashtriya Ekta Divas was today observed in the city in a befitting manner.

The Day was observed on the occasion of the birth anniversary of �Iron Man� Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first Deputy Prime Minister of India.

A �Run For Peace� was organised on the occasion this morning from the SAI Complex, Paltan Bazar, where a good number of sportspersons, students and people from different walks of life took part.

A memorial meeting was also held to pay tribute to the Iron Man of India at the SAI Complex where Central Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, MPs SS Ahluwalia and Ramen Deka, and State BJP president Siddhartha Bhattacharyya were present.

Speaking on the occasion, Sonowal paid rich tributes to Patel and recalled his contributions in building the nation. Sonowal urged the young generation to imbibe Patel�s ideals.

SS Ahluwalia, while recalling Patel�s contributions, explained how he became �Sardar� although he was not a Sikh. The Darjeeling MP also revealed that Patel had been able to bring the Rajas and Maharajas of the British-ruled India under one umbrella immediately after the Independence.

Ramen Deka and Siddhartha Bhattacharyya also paid rich tributes to Vallabhbhai Patel.

Sportspersons Taibun Nisha and Elvis Ali Hazarika were felicitated on the occasion, along with other leading persons.
