GUWAHATI, Sept 10 � Tributes were paid to the memory of Prof Jogesh Das, one of the foremost novelists and short story writers of modern Assamese literature, at a function held at the Bhagawati Prasad Baruah Bhawan under the auspices of the Kamrup Mahanagar Zila Sahitya Sabha, on Sunday.

The function held under the presidentship of senior journalist DN Chakravartty was formally inaugurated by linguist Dr Pramod Chandra Bhattacharya and was addressed by writer Bimal Kumar Hazarika as appointed speaker.

Dr Bhatttacharya, in his speech, described Prof Jogesh Das as a prolific writer, a dedicated teacher, and a respectable journalist. He made some critical references to the major literary works of Prof Das.

Hazarika, in his speech, said that Prof Das reflected in his writings the joys and sorrows of the lower middle class and the downtrodden communities. Chakravartty, in his presidential remarks, described Prof Das as one of the most outstanding writers of the Ramdhenu era, and a very respectable president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha.

Earlier, Hemen Talukdar, vice president of the Kamrup Mahanagar Zila Sahitya Sabha lit the ceremonial lamp and placed floral wreaths at the portrait of Prof Das.

Dimbeswar Pathak, secretary, Kamrup Mahanagar Zila Sahitya Sabha welcomed the guests and explained the purpose of the function.
