Rich tributes paid to Dr Bhupen Hazarika

GUWAHATI, Sept 8 - The All Assam Students� Union paid tributes to Dr Bhupen Hazarika on the occasion of his 89th birthday with a cultural programme titled Uddipana, at Dighalipukhuripar today.

Uddipana, the annual event of the student body, features the best singers from colleges and universities across the State, who remember the cultural icon by presenting his immortal songs.

Earlier, AASU president (in-charge) Pradip Das, general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi and chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharyya inaugurated the programme and paid tribute to Dr Hazarika at Dighalipukhuripar.

The programme continued at the site throughout the day. The student leaders also visited the Bhupen Hazarika Samannay Khetra at Jalukbari to pay homage to the maestro.

Our Jorabat Correspondent adds: Hundreds of school and college students paid tribute to Dr Bhupen Hazarika at Sonapur today on the occasion of the maestro�s 89th birthday.

The programme was organised by the Inter Dimoria Regional Students� Union, a unit of the AASU, near the statue of the legendary singer. The statue was installed and inaugurated by famous singer from Meghalaya Lou Majaw on this day last year.

Many socially concious citizens of Dimoria gathered beside Dr Hazarika�s statue at Sonapur to pay tribute to him.

�His songs make us feel as if he is alive among us even today,� said social activist of the area and former student leader Anil Baishya.

Dimoria AASU president Jayanta Kalita, after paying tribute to the maestro, said, �Dr Hazarika may not be present among us today physically, but by his songs, social activities, by his works of struggle for the Assamese language and the Assamese community, he will always be present in our heart and soul. It is the need of the hour that our present and future generations keep his teachings alive by following in his footsteps an taking him as their idol.�

Songs of the maestro were played on the occasion, making the people present in the area nostalgic.
