SILCHAR, Nov 24 - Lachit Divas was centrally observed with reverence in Silchar on Sunday.

Organised by the Hindu Yuba Chatra Parishad and the All Assam Bengali Hindu Association (ABHA), the function saw an assembly of political leadership and satradhikars from different parts of the State including the likes of former Union minister and senior BJP leader Kabindra Purkayastha, Excise and Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya, Purbanchal Tai Sahitya Sabha president Dayananda Borgohain, Satradhikar of Dakshin Pat Satra, Majuli Janardhan Deva Goswami, Hindu Yuba Chatra Parishad president Bolen Baishya and All Assam Bengali Hindu Association president Basudeb Sharma paying tributes to Lachit Borphukan.

Mahant Surendra Nath Avadhoot, the Mahant of Kalkaji Temple, Delhi urged the people of the State, the Assamese and Bengali-speaking people in particular to strengthen the cohesive bond rising above the linguistic differences.

We must follow the ideals of Bir Lachit, the brave general in Assam history and work for the greater interest of the state. The two largest communities must unite as Hindus for the larger cause leaving the linguistic differences behind, the Mahanta opined.

Further, the Mahant maintained that the base year for a pan-India NRC should be 1951 and the exercise must be absolutely error-free.
