TEZPUR, May 29 - Rhino poaching has been declining in the Kaziranga National Park (KNP) due to anti-poaching strategies carried out by the park authorities. This was claimed by P Sivakumar, Director of KNP here today.
Addressing a press conference, he claimed that the rhino poaching is on the wane not only in the KNP, but also in the entire State on account of stepped up vigil carried out by the Forest staff, coupled with new strategies. �Our new management programmes have yielded desired results. These programmes have also benefited the people living in nearby areas,� he claimed.
While giving a sketch of the management programmes, the Director revealed that six nearby villages have been selected for providing training on organic farming and pisciculture under the climate-resilient livelihood programme so that they can become self-reliant. �The new project will cover 2,400 households, and we are optimistic that they will be able to reap benefit of the scheme,� he claimed.
�We are also trying to promote Agaratoli, Burapahar, Panpur, Gamiri and Biswanatah Ghat Range as major tourist destinations in order to woo domestic and foreign tourists�, he said, adding that this new move is likely to help the unemployed youths in these areas. In this context, he added that a slew of schemes are on the pipeline in a bid to protect the flora and fauna of the park.
