Rhino horn smugglers arrested

JORHAT, May 13 � Acting on a tip-off Pulibar police of Jorhat nabbed two persons today on the charge of smuggling rhino horns while they were residing at a residence in Malowkhat area on the outskirts of urban Jorhat.

The accused have been identified as Padma Pegu and Prabin Pegu of Dhemaji district who had allegedly carried two rhino horns from the poachers of Gohpur and tried to hand over the animal parts to a gang based at Dimapur.

According to police the two horns weighed more than 400 grams. During interrogation the accused revealed that they had a contract with the Dimapur gang of smugglers who allegedly sold such parts in some provinces of Myanmar.

Police said that two of their accomplices are yet to be nabbed as they could evade arrest just before the arrival of police. Investigation is on. We hope the other two accomplices will also be arrested soon, said a police officer.
