GUWAHATI, Dec 2 The elected body of the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC) will try to fulfil the aspirations of all sections of the people living in the areas under the Councils jurisdiction, irrespective of their ethnicity, said Rabha Hasong Joint Movement Committee (RHJMC) chief convenor Tankeswar Rabha today. Rabha, who is also the president of the All Rabha Students Union (ARSU), was talking to this newspaper.

We will try to redress the grievances of all sections of the people, irrespective of their ethnicity, he said.

The RHJMC had swept the recently held elections to the RHAC by winning 29 out of the 36 seats to which the elections were held in three phases.

The Congress could bag three seats, with the Independent candidates also winning an equal number of seats and the BJP winning only one seat in the elections.

The RHJMC chief convenor said that they will try to form the Council at the earliest.

The elections to the RHAC were held 18 years after its formation. Inordinate delay in holding the elections to the Council had become a major issue for the ARSU and the RHJMC. Both the organizations had to launch a series of agitation for a protracted period to mount pressure on the authorities to hold the elections to the Council.

Several organisations tried to resist the elections to the RHAC for quite a long time and this created serious misgivings among the people living in the Autonomous Council areas, threatening a major rift among the people on ethnic lines.

However, around 79 per cent of the voters turned out in the RHAC elections. The RHJMC chief convenor described this as proof of the support of the overwhelming majority of the area to the elections.
