RGU honours Hima Das

GUWAHATI, Aug 8 - India�s first track and field gold medallist, Assam�s pride Hima Das, who clocked 51.46 seconds in the IAAF World U-20 Championships in Tampere, Finland, was honoured by Royal Global University (RGU) during its second orientation programme for students today.

A cheque of Rs one lakh, extended to Hima by the University for the historic feat, was accepted on her behalf by her parents Ranjit Das and Jonali Das, who were also accorded a warm felicitation at the function, stated a press release.

A video clip showcasing the glorious victory of the 18-year-old moved everyone present at the function, including students, faculty and staff members of RGU.

Hima�s father reminisced about her journey from a nondescript village at Dhing in Nagaon district to Finland, and encouraged the students present at the function to follow their dreams and never give up in life. He also sought everyone�s prayers and blessings for Hima�s further success in the future.

Dr NC Talukdar, Director of IASST, Guwahati, was the chief guest of the programme while Maninder Singh, State Principal Secretary of Higher Education, was the guest of honour. The dignitaries encouraged the students to draw inspiration from Hima Das who has shown that perseverance, determination and smart thinking can help an individual achieve tough goals. RGU Vice Chancellor Prof (Dr) SP Singh also delivered a highly motivating speech.

A dance recital on Ganesh Vandana and a Sattriya dance performance by students added vigour to the programme. The orientation programme will continue till August 14.
