DIBRUGARH, Oct 17 - The 116th birth anniversary of Singhapurush Radha Govinda Baruah, founder of The Assam Tribune Group of Publications, Assam�s foremost cultural and sports organiser of his times, was celebrated in the city with due fervour, under the aegis of the Dibrugarh RG Baruah Memorial Committee.
On the occasion, RG�s bust at the Sahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbaroa Udyan (Phoolbagan) was garlanded and floral tributes were offered by citizens here, besides members of the committee.
Speakers like Bhudev Phukan and Dr Sunil Kumar Borthakur recalled the sterling contributions of RG in society building and also for founding one of India�s most trusted newspapers, The Assam Tribune, and its sister publications, Dainik Asam, Asam Bani and Gariyoshi.
In his address, Bhudev Phukan, who is a noted social worker, said it is high time the State�s electronic media has a credible news channel, and wanted The Assam Tribune Group to launch a news TV channel so that people of eastern India get to watch news that has credibility. According to Phukan, none of the current bouquet of news TV channels in Assam give any importance to credibility of news that is telecast. His suggestion was accepted wholeheartedly by all in the audience. The guests at the function later said they want The Assam Tribune management to go ahead with a �Tribune News Channel�.
Dibrugarh RG Baruah Memorial Committee president Dr KR Baruah and secretary Ron Duarah thanked the members and the citizens for their active participation in today�s RG birth anniversary function. They assured the audience that their demand for a �Tribune News Channel� would be duly conveyed to the appropriate authorities.
