RG Baruah-founded body to celebrate Dussehra on Sept 30

GUWAHATI, Sept 20 - As in the previous years, the Asom Vijaya Dashami Mahotsav Samity, founded by late RG Baruah, will organise the Dussehra celebrations in association with Friends Club, Fancy Bazar, in a befitting manner on September 30.

The venue for the celebrations is the old jail compound at Fancy Bazar.

The occasion will witness � besides the burning of effigies of Ravan, Kumbhakarna and Meghnad along with a spectacular display of traditional fireworks from Barpeta � staging of the Ram Vijay bhaona (play).

The occasion will be attended by Governor Banwarilal Purohit as the chief guest, while Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will be the guest of honour. Other dignitaries will also be present.

Elaborate arrangements are being made by the organising committee under the guidance of its chairman, Ram Niranjan Goenka, who is also the president of Brihattar Fancy Bazar Sahitya Sabha.

�Ramleela, a skit by renowned dramatist and singer Navin Joshi and his team of professionals and local artistes depicting various chapters of the Ramayana culminating with the fight between Ram and Ravan, and followed by the burning of effigies and fireworks display, will be among the highlights of the day. The effigies of Ravan, Kumbhakarna and Meghnad are being designed and made by famous artist Md Safiqul Islam and his team from Bechimari, Kharupetia, conveying the message of brotherhood in the enduring spirit of Srimanta Sankaradeva and Ajan Fakir,� Arun Sharma, honorary secretary, and Sudhir Saraf, president of the Mahotsav Samity, said at a press conference today.

The members of the Gujarat Welfare Society, Assam, will perform the sacred and religious Garba dance during the Ramleela skit and social organisations like Maheshwari Sabha, Pareekh Sabha and Assam Baidyanath Kanwar Sangh will serve free drinking water to the spectators.

The organisers also appreciated the cooperation extended by the GMDA, district administration, Police Commissionerate, State Fire Service Organization, Guwahati Municipal Corporation, Guwahati Traffic Police, APDCL and other associates.
