Reunion of Cotton hostel ex-boarders

GUWAHATI, Jan 20 - A daylong programme was held in the SMH Hostel, Cotton College (formerly Cotton Muslim Hostel) recently as part of a reunion event of boarders of 1940s, 50s, 70s and 80s, besides the recent boarders.

Former boarder Md Abdul Wahid who stayed in the hostel in 1941, hoisted two flags. The programme started with an exchange of old memories among the boarders.

Prakash Chetry, general secretary of the reunion committee said that the Muslim Hostel roofed lots of talented persons of the North East who went on to contribute meaningfully in diverse fields, especially in the fields of public administration and judiciary education.

Citing examples, he said that former chief justice of the high courts of J&K and Sikkim Dr Aftab Hussain Saikia, former speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly Seikh Chand Mohammad, MLA Sherman Ali, former minister Abu Saleh Nizamuddin, APSC member Dr Samedur Rahman, IAS officers Md Mahtab Uddin Ahmed, Sabbir Hussain and Sayed Iftikar Hussain, IPS officers Raunak Ali Hazarika and Derajuddin Ahmed and senior advocate Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Chaudhury were boarders of the hostel.

President of the executive committee and super of the Muslim Hostel Dr Arup Kumar Hazarika said that the hostel was witness to a glorious past, adding that it was the best podium for extending best education to the minority students of eastern India.
