By Staff Correspondent

DIBRUGARH, March 9 The Dibrugarh University Retired Teaching and Non-Teaching Employees Association, along with their dependants today gheraoed the Vice Chancellor, Dr Alak Kumar Buragohain, at the varsitys guest house over reports of uncertainty in payment of financial relief and pensions to the pensioners of DU and apprised him of their concern.

About a hundred members of the Dibrugarh University Retired Teaching and Non-Teaching Employees Association assembled near the DU guest house, located behind the residence of the Vice Chancellor, hours before the meeting of the Executive Council of the varsity and surrounded the Vice Chancellor as part of their agitational programme.

The protesters demanded that the financial relief being currently given to the retired employees be continued till the receipt of pension grant from the State government.

The programme was led by its working president LN Kouli and joint secretaries R Ullah and CK Das. The leaders told the Vice Chancellor that they may have to confront dire financial problems if the relief is discontinued, in view of the rising costs of essential commodities, medicines and hospital charges.

The Association submitted two resolutions that the members had adopted during its recent general body meeting. In its first resolution, the Association requested the Dibrugarh University authorities to implement the pension scheme without any delay in order to mitigate the hardship being faced by the DU pensioners as well as the family pensioners.

The second resolution stated that the current practice of providing relief to the pensioners and family pensioners at the rate of one third of their admissible pension amount be continued without any disruption till the payment of the total pension is made.

The agitating members left immediately after the Vice Chancellor assured that he would look into the matter.
