Retd teachers demo against deceit

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, July 25 Members of the Assam Provincialised Retired Teachers and Employees Association on Friday staged a sit-in demonstration in the NCP office campus at Dighalipukhuripar in protest against the alleged policy of deceit and double standard towards the retired teachers.

In a statement, the association said that at a time when the State Government had been a total failure in addressing different burning issues such as the unprecedented rise into prices of essential commodities, and in ensuring pay parity for all its employees and teachers at Central pay scale, it was extremely unfortunate on its part to have effected a four-fold rise in the salaries of ministers and MLAs.

The State Government is under an obligation to explain why the salaries and pensions of the teachers and employees have not been raised as had been done in the case of salaries and allowance of ministers and MLAs, the association said.

The association demanded that the minimum pension and family pension of retired teachers and employees should be made at least Rs 3,500. Demanding that the State Government should effect an increase of 20 per cent, 30 per cent, 40 per cent, 50 per cent and 100 per cent for retired teachers and employees who have crossed the age of 80, 85, 90, 95 and 100 respectively as has been done by the Union Government for the retired teachers and employees, the association said that the recently published pay structure of the State Government left a lot to be desired in addressing the lack of pay parity of the teachers and employees with their counterparts in other States.

The association gave a deadline till August 15 to the government for redressing its grievances failing which it would intensify its stir.
