Resumption of ferry system at Biswanath Ghat demanded

By Correspondent

BISWANATH CHARIALI, June 22 - Several organisations of Biswanath Chariali have urged the government to resume the inland water transport system at Biswanath Ghat, around 20 kilometres away from here. It needs mention here that the system had prevailed during the British era and this mode of transport made significant strides in the field of commerce, starting with travel. After India achieved independence, it was introduced in 1958 again. Regular ferry services began in 1970 from Biswanath Ghat to Silghat, Nagaon but it was stopped by the Government of Assam in 1971.

The organisations including Biswanath Chariali Nagarik Santha and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) submitted separate memoranda to the Director of Assam Inland Water Transport Department and Deputy Commissioner, Biswanath recently and demanded to initiate necessary steps in this respect. They opined that the resumption of this water transport system will make Biswanath Ghat a business hub since the sixth extension of the Kaziranga National Park includes the Biswanath Ghat area. This will be a new addition to the tourism map of Assam and a new path of employment will be opened for the local youths, they added.

Solar eclipse watching: At the initiative of Biswanath Chariali Branch of Assam Science Society and Akash Science and Environment Education Centre, a massive solar eclipse observation programme was held at several places in Biswanath district on June 21. The people and the students enjoyed this rare cosmic phenomenon at Biswanath Chariali, Gelapukhuri, Chatiya Bhaskarjyoti Adarsha Vidyapith and Dekorai Higher Secondary School with the help of pin-hole camera, Mylar glass, welding glass No. 14, etc maintaining the social distance. Pranab Ojha and Rumi Barai of Bhaskarajyoti Adarsh Vidyapeeth tried their best to remove superstitions from the minds of the students by feeding edibles during the eclipse.
