Resignation of Dr Saikia, Borgohain unfortunate

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 22 The resignation of Dr Nagen Saikia and Homen Borgohain former presidents of Asom Sahitya Sabha from membership of the Sabha has been described by DN Chakravartty, president of Kamrup Mahanagar Zila Sahitya Sabha as very unfortunate and injurious to the welfare of Assams largest literary and cultural organization.

Chakravartty, while reacting to the resignation of both the presidents, said in a statement that the Sabha was not only the biggest national organization of Assam but was also one of the largest and oldest literary bodies of the whole world with the association of internationally known scholars like Krishnakanta Handique, Dr Surya Kumar Bhuyan and Dr Mayidul Islam Bora, and hallowed by the association of literary stalwarts like Lakshminath Bezbaruah, Padmanath Gohain Baruah, Dr Maheswar Neog and Dr Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya.

Chakravartty said that whatever unpleasant decisions or activities that might have surfaced during the current year and which might not be palatable to a section of the people of the literary world, there were definite ways to correct the ailments from within the precincts of the forum.

Chakravartty said that if the 25,000 college teachers from over 600 colleges of the State and over four lakh degree and postgraduate students of the State get into Asam Sahitya Sabha as ordinary members they can generate a gigantic positive force capable of correcting all the ailments the Sabha is said to be afflicted with.

Chakravartty called upon both the former presidents of the Sabha to reconsider their decision and to take the initiative in showing the correct path to the Sabha in order to enable it to fulfil the dream for which the great organization was set up 1917.
