Republic Day celebrated with pomp, gaiety

GUWAHATI, Jan 28 � Reports of the celebration of the 62nd Republic Day have come in from our correspondents:

At Dibrugarh: The Tricolour was unfurled at Chowkidinghee ground by Water Resources Minister Prithibi Majhi who also took the salute from several contingents.

The 318 Field Regiment of the Dah Division felicitated the freedom fighters of Rajgarh in the district and Mahamara in Sivasagar district. Officers from the unit met freedom fighters of the area. Prominent among them were 94-year-old Motiram Chetia of Ratanpur, Bogen Chetia of Takalia and widow of Bimalanand Nath of Rangabanani.

At Dhemaji: The 62nd Republic Day was celebrated at Dhemaji Court Field under the auspices of the Dhemaji district administration. Dhemaji DC Dr P Ashok Babu unfurled the Tricolour. After the march past, the SSA, NRHM and PHE departments displayed tableau. Cultural programmes were performed by various ethnic groups.

The national innovation award winning student of Dhemaji, Archana Konwar was felicitated by the Dhemaji DC. Ten freedom fighters, 5 ASHA workers, 5 ASHA facilitators and VDP organisers were also feted. Earlier, the DC paid homage to the 14 terror blast victims of the Independence Day function in 2004 at the Dhemaji College field.

At Dergaon: The Republic Day was celebrated at the Naren Sarmah Memorial Field where the Tricolour was unfurled by Dhiraj Das, Circle Officer. Noted social worker Atul Goswami was felicitated.

The day was also observed at the Dergaon police complex where the Tricolour was unfurled by Dr SK Phukan, the DIG (TRG/EB), Dergaon at the PTC stadium.

At Bilasipara: The 62nd Republic Day was celebrated at Bilasipara subdivision, an official release said.

SDO (Civil) Dhruba Jyoti Das unfurled the Tricolour. The celebrations began with the airing of patriotic songs through the FLS of the SDIPRO office.

A cultural show was conducted by students and local artists. Prizes were given away to the winners of various competitions. Fruits and sweets were distributed among the inmates of the Mother Welfare and Child Care Centre. A friendly cricket match was played between SDO(C) XI and District Sports Association XI, Bilasipara.

At Srirampur: Parliamentary Secretary to the Government of Assam, Parameswar Brahma hoisted the Tricolour at the Gossaigaon HS School playground, Gossaigaon.

At Gauripur: The Republic Day was celebrated at the Raja PC Barua playground at Dhubri. The Tricolour was unfurled by Sidique Ahmed, Parliamentary Secretary, Assam, who also took the salute of the paramilitary forces, police and NCC cadets and Guides.

He distributed aids to beneficiaries. An art competition was organised among the students.

At Golokganj, the national flag was hoisted by Sanjib Daloi, EAC, Dhubri at the Jagamohan Vidyapith playground. At Gauripur, the Tricolour was hoisted by Anupama Bagaria, chairperson, Gauripur DC, at the historic Mahamaya playground.

At Kohora: The Republic Day was celebrated at a function held at Bokakhat Public Field. Parliamentary Secretary for Power, Industry and Commerce Bidya Singh Enleng hoisted the National Flag.

At Jorhat: Education Minister Gautam Bora hoisted the Tricolour at the Republic Day function at the Jorhat Court Field. He received the guard of honour from the Assam Police, CRPF, Home Guards, NCC cadets, Scouts and Guides and students. Freedom fighters Mahendranath Barua, Nil Kumar Bora, Bhabananda Hazarika and Nirmala Hazarika were felicitated. Bora also feted child scientist Khanindra Barua.

Five sportpersons Ritish Burhagohain, Dayal Krishna Dutta, Satyajit Buragohain, Rima Dutta and Nakul Bordoloi were also felicitated. Bora formally declared JB College, Jorhat College, Padmanath Sarma HS School, Titabor, Kalyani High School, Jorhat and Balya Bhavan, Jorhat as �Tobacco Free� institutions.

At Jonai: The Jonai subdivisional administration celebrated the Republic day with fervour. The Tricolour at the Jonai HS School playground was hoisted by SDO Arpan Kumar Saikia.The programme included cultural programmes and sports events.

At Margherita: The Republic Day celebrations began at Margherita with the relay of patriotic songs through the public address system. Tributes were paid to national martyrs followed by the unfurling of the Tricolour at the Central Field by the chief guest, Jeevan Tara Ghatowar, Parliamentary Secretary, Health Department.

On the occasion, 110 year-old Sunnet Chowlik of Powaimukh village was feted for his contributions to the growth of education in that remote village. Nripen Roy of Margherita Town High School and Bidyut Baruah of Baruah Grant of Makum Killa area were declared the best teacher and best cultivator of the subdivision respectively.

At Dhing: The National Flag was hoisted by GS Das, Revenue Circle Officer on the circle office premises. A cultural show was presented by local artistes.

At Halem: The National Flag was unfurled at Gohpur by Manoj Kumar, SDO (C), Gohpur. Two village headmen were honoured. A cultural function was held. Circle Officer RK Bora hoisted the National Flag at the Halem Revenue Circle Office.
