Repair of roads in Dhemaji district demanded

By Correspondent

DHEMAJI, Feb 25 Demanding early construction of four deplorable roads connecting Machkhowa in Dhemaji, the members of the Mach-khowa unit of the Asom Yuba Parishad staged a three-hour road blockade programme at Machkhowa Chariali.

The strike was led by Jayanta Borgohain, president and Robin Kouch, secretary of the youth organisation and Jamini Kouch, chairman, Dhemaji district unit of Manab Adhikar Sangram Samittee and local youth leader Dipamoni Dutta.

It may be mentioned here that the Dhemaji-Machkhowa, Dhakuakhana-Machkhowa and Machkhowa-Batomari PWD roads connecting greater Machkhowa area in Dhemaji district had not been reconstructed or repaired for the last 15 years after these were badly damaged in the 1996 floods.

As a result, the roads have turned into death traps with creation of many big potholes on the roads. Under such a condition, the residents of the greater area have been demanding construction of the dilapidated roads and placing the issue before the Dhemaji DC and local MLA Sumitra Doley Patir for the last five years, but the authorities reportedly give only assurances and nothing has been taken up in this regard.

To highlight their demand about 600 people blocked the road at Machkhowa Chariali, on the alleged apathy of the government towards the plight of the rural people of Machkhowa area. The activists later submitted a memorandum to PWD Minister, Ajanta Neog through the Dhemaji DC in this regard.
