Remembering Nabin Chandra Bordoloi

By The Assam Tribune

IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY, Swami Vivekananda defined a good human being as honest, lives his life with integrity and behaves responsibly. A good man loves God and his fellow human beings on earth.

Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Buffalo Mastor, whose birth centenary falls this year very aptly fits into the above view of Swami Vivekananda. Bordoloi Sir was born on December 18, 1918 in Dibrugarh. He was a man blessed with a sharp intellect, genuine patriotism, and awe-inspiring ability for structured reasoning. He could earn respect not only from a large number of his students and followers but also from people with whom he came into contact.

My little heart swells with pride the moment I utter the name of the then George Institution, now Bagmibor Nilomoni Phukan Higher Secondary School. This is not because of the fact that I did my matriculation from here. I feel so because I grew up in its attractive vicinity, spent my childhood and youth playing and learning here.

A galaxy of gurus at whose feet I had my high school education from 1953-1961, have left an indelible mark in my memory. And one of the gurus was Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Buffalo Master who was a teacher, assistant head master, founder of Dibrugarh Sangeet Vidyalaya, local correspondent at Dibrugarh of various newspapers such as The Hindustan Standard, The Assam Tribune, Janambhumi (weekly) etc. Through these papers, Bordoloi Sir served the people of Dibrugarh and Assam. He was a very efficient secretary of Dibrugarh Journalists Association, of which he was the founder. Bordoloi Sir had a strong command over Assamese and English languages. His articles in different papers speak volumes of his versatile pen.

Assamese literature became rich with his contributions in the field of drama, poetry and other literary activities. He also wrote two books on Mahatma Gandhi and Netaji Subash Chandra Bose.

Through Jeutimoral Sangha and the then Dibrugarh Sangeet Vidyalaya, he served the people of Dibrugarh for a long time. During those days, there was hardly any cultural function in which Bordoloi Sirs active participation did not contribute to its success. He was one of the founders of the All Assam Aided High School Teachers Association. He was also Joint Secretary of Dibrugarh District Congress Committee for some time.

On his birth centenary today, let us pray for the peace of his soul and express our gratitude for the good work done by him.
