Release of prisoners completing 14-years sought

By Staff Correspondent

DIBRUGARH, Dec 31 - Family members of prisoners who have completed life term imprisonment but not released have sought the intervention of the Governor in setting them free by directing the State Government.

The families have alleged that despite completion of 14-year life-term by prisoners, they were not set free for reasons best known to the State Government.

In a memorandum submitted to the Governor through the district administration here the family members stated that the State Government was holding back the prisoners who were served life term through various notifications and orders despite completion of their term.

The memorandum submitted to the Governor has been signed by at least 50 families of the prisoners. The signatories informed that their family members lodged in the jail were almost completing 19 years now.

Until 2012, prisoners undergoing life term were released after 14 years but now several have been held back, they said. The family members who also submitted a similar memorandum to the Chief Minister said that the policy adopted before 2012 to release prisoners after completion of their life term must also be applied now so that they get united with the families to begin life afresh.
