DIMAPUR, June 10 - The Mokokchung Town Lanur Telongjem (MTLT) today stated that the people of Mokokchung town have been suffering due to scarcity of potable water for the last many years.
Demanding a solution to the prolonged drinking water crisis, the organisation has set a deadline of 45 days, starting from June 9, to the Mokokchung division of the Nagaland PHED, asking it to take immediate action to ensure supply of regular drinking water in the town.
An ultimatum, addressed to the Executive Engineer, Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), Mokokchung Division, stated that the MTLT had raised the issue with the department and other competent authorities on several occasions over the years. �However, our concerns and queries have been met with excuses after excuses,� the ultimatum added.
The MTLT said it would not entertain any excuses on this matter in future. There are many families in different colonies of the town who have to buy drinking water from water merchants.
�The saddest part is that those families who have a PHED water pipe connection are compelled to buy water even during the monsoon season,� the MTLT rued.
It further pointed out that as per a survey conducted by it, about 2,500 families in the town have not been getting any water supply. However, they are being charged maintenance fees every month.
If the department cannot supply water even to these 2,500 families having pipeline connections, how can it supply water to other households which are yet to get pipe connections, the MTLT asked.
