Regional meet of NE legal services authority personnel

By Staff correspondent

SHILLONG, Oct 10 - Meghalaya High Court judge Justice HS Thangkhiew today said that there is minimum knowledge and awareness about laws in the North Eastern region.

During his inaugural address at the two-day regional consultation programme of State Legal Services Authority (SLSA) member secretaries and secretaries of the North East region, Justice Thangkhiew stressed that SLSAs should, therefore, play an important role in this region.

He said legal services authorities play an important role in helping the deprived sections of society by providing legal assistance, especially in the North East. Justice Thangkhiew said the consultation programme provides a platform for members of the SLSAs to introspect, deliberate and exchange ideas, and understand the peculiar problems of the region.

The judge further urged the participants to focus on the problems and come up with strategies to make legal services stronger and effective. Later, discussions were held on new amendments in regulations, early access to justice, quality of legal services, empanelment of competent lawyers, capacity building, monitoring and mentoring committees and other allied topics.
