Record rice production in State: Sen Deka

GUWAHATI, Dec 5 � The State made an all time high record in rice production with 52 lakh 33,000 metric tonnes (MTs) in the 2012-13 fiscal. It created one more all time high record with an average of 2,130 kgs per hectare (HA) and this was in the area of rice productivity, in all the three seasons of Ahu, Sali and Boro, during the same fiscal, said Agriculture Minister Nilamani Sen Deka. The Minister was talking to this correspondent here today.

This has elevated the status of the State to the first category of rice producing States. Earlier, it was in the second category of rice producing States. To become a first category rice producing State, a State needs to produce more than 50 lakh MT of rice in a year.

For the 2012-13 fiscal, the anticipated national level of productivity in matters of rice production is 2415 kgs per HA, the Minister said.

The State will make its presentation for the national award in food grain production on 14th of the current month, said the Minister.

The State recorded a four per cent increase in rice production during the year and its percentage of increase in productivity was 7 per cent during the same year.

In 2011-12, the State produced 50.45 lakh MTs of rice. This was also the highest production it recorded in the area till then. Its productivity in the area was 19.86 quintal per HA during that year.

According to the sources in the Agriculture Department, during the financial year 2012-13, State�s agricultural sector provisionally recorded an overall growth of 7.5 per cent. The share of foodgrains in it was 72.4 per cent. The final estimate of the agricultural produces for the fiscal was completed only recently, even as the growth rate is soon going to be finalized.

During the year, the share of agriculture in the Gross State Domestic Products (GSDP) was 18.22 per cent, against the all India 12.02 per cent.

The small and marginal farm sector of the State registered a strength of 85.6 per cent in the overall farm family structure (27.20 lakh as per 2010-11 Agriculture Census), against the all India rate of 85.0 per cent in the sector, sources said.

Moreover, cropping intensity of the State during the year was 148 per cent, against the all India rate of 141 per cent in this regard.
