Record 90.62% voter turnout in Mankachar LAC

By Correspondent

HATSINGIMARI, April 13 A record 90.62 per cent of voter turnout was recorded in 21 Mankachar LAC in Dhubri district during the second phase of polling on Monday. In 21 Mankachar LAC out of 1,55,168 eligible voters 1,40,429 votes were polled. It may be noted that the 21 Mankachar LAC also recorded the highest poll percentage of more than 89 in the Assembly elections of 2006 also.

In 22 South Salmara LAC of the same district out of 1,41,912 eligible voters, 1,23,000 voters turned out the poll percentage being 86.67.

The fear of the minority people of the locality of being branded D voters if they remain absent during the polls as they are scattered all over the State due to the erosion of the Brahmaputra, is felt to be the reason behind the heavy turnout. The straight contests in both the constituencies may also have influenced in the poll percentage.
