Reason behind reckless driving by truckers revealed

By Correspondent

JORABAT, March 24 - Nowadays, it is not usual to find a truck or dumper being driven recklessly on the city roads. Perhaps, one of the reasons behind such a careless act has now finally been revealed.

A number of conscious citizens have been raising their voices by writing letters to newspapers to seek attention of the authorities against such reckless driving habits of truck drivers. It has been observed that mostly trucks and dumpers carrying earth, sand and stones drive recklessly on the city roads.

This correspondent spoke to a number of truck drivers involved in such businesses who revealed that they are paid on the basis of the number of trips they make.

A trucker, however, said that it is not due to thrill that they overspeed. It is because of the greed of money the mafia and government officials have that forces them to drive recklessly.

Another interesting fact which came to light is that the truckers procure a single challan for unlimited number of trips on a single day. In reality, a separate challan is required for every trip a truck makes. Thus, the truck drivers spend less on the challan in order to gain huge profits in an unethical way.

Making it more possible, a section of allegedly corrupt government officials from the forest department as well as police leave most of the trucks unchecked to earn their part of the profit. For personal gain, the officers in return allow the trucks to pass in a hassle-free manner, thereby causing a huge loss of revenue to the State.

Such a sight can be seen at two areas of the city at Koinadhara near Khanapara and Jorabat. Despite a number of forest officials on duty at both the checkpoints, most of the overladen trucks pass through unchecked.
