Rath Yatra celebrated in Barak Valley

SILCHAR, July 5 - Devotees were out on the streets in large numbers across Barak Valley pulling the holy chariots on the occasion of Rath Yatra on Thursday.

In Silchar this year, the embellished chariot of Lord Jagannath along with brother Balaram and sister Subhadra was taken out from Madan Mohan Akhra in Tarapur amidst chanting of Hare Krishna hymns.

Cachar Deputy Commissioner Laya Madduri did the customary cleaning of the path with the traditional golden broom to start the proceedings of pulling the holy chariot. She prayed before the deities and wished that the festival ushers in peace and prosperity in the lives of people.

Chariots taken out by various organizations, including Goudiya Math, Radhamadhav Akhra, Gopal Akhra were witnessed by people throughout late evening hours as well.

Residents of Manipuri Basti on the outskirts of Silchar thronged the streets pulling the chariots.

Meanwhile, tight security arrangements were made across the district in order to ensure no untoward incident take place during the procession of the chariots.

On the other hand, Rath Yaatra was also celebrated with great fervour in Karimganj.
