IMPHAL, Oct 31 - Manipur today observed the Rashtiya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) to mark the 145th birth anniversary of late Sadar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Iron Man of India, at the 1st Manipur Rifles Parade Ground here. The function held on the occasion was attended by Chief Minister N Biren Singh, Deputy Chief Minister Y Joykumar Singh, other Cabinet ministers, MLAs, the Chief Secretary, the DGP, and top civil and police officers.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said that the National Unity Day is observed to honour the contribution made by Sadar Vallabhbhai Patel in nation building. Biren Singh said that the observance of the day gives the message to everyone that �despite differences in culture and traditions among various inhabitants of the country, we can build a strong nation defending our unity, integrity and security by following the path of our great leaders�.
The Chief Minister said that his Government is still undertaking developmental activities despite the hindrances posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The State Government has been coordinating with various civil society organisations to contain the spread of the virus. In this regard, a new standard operating procedure (SOP) will be issued soon. He appealed to the public to strictly comply with the SOP.
The Chief Minister also took salute from five marching contingents including the BSF, CRPF, Manipur Rifles, Civil Police, Imphal West (male) and 9th IR (Mahila) Battalion, and a combined band platoon.
Meanwhile, the Rashtriya Sankalp Diwas was also observed at the Manipur Secretariat today to mark the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Chief Minister N Biren Singh was the chief guest of the function held on the occasion, which was presided over by Deputy Chief Minister Y Joykumar Singh.
Itanagar Correspondent adds: Along with the rest of the country, the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas was observed at the Raj Bhavan here on Saturday.
Participating in the function held on the occasion, Arunachal Pradesh Governor Brig Dr BD Mishra (retd), along with his wife Neelam Misra and officials and staff of the Raj Bhavan, paid floral tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
In his speech, the Governor urged the people of the State to continue the endeavour to reinforce the spirit of unity and nationalism, and imbibe the ideals of Sardar Patel.
Mishra recalled the challenges the people faced under the British rule and the nascent stage of the country�s independence. He also remembered the proactive role of Sardar Patel in ensuring the joining of Jammu and Kashmir and Hyderabad in the Indian Union. He said that many people contributed towards India�s Independence, but the most genuine and bold contribution was made by Sardar Patel, stated a Raj Bhavan release here.
The Governor also participated in the �Walk for Unity� along with the Raj Bhavan staff and ITBP personnel. He later administered the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas pledge to all present to preserve the unity, integrity and security of the nation and also make contributions to ensure the internal security of the country.
