GUWAHATI, June 11 - A heart surgery team of GNRC led by senior heart surgeon Dr Sunil Dawka, recently conducted the regions first surgery to rectify a rare heart defect known as ruptured sinus of valsalva (RSOV) aneurysm. The complex prcedure was conducted on a 32-year-old patient.

RSOV is a rare defect which can be congenital or acquired and has an incidence of 0.14 to 0.35 per cent, with a higher incidence in Asia. Once detected, it needs early treatment to avoid dreaded complications like myocardial infarction (heart attack), complete heart block, sudden cardiac death, infective endocarditis, cardiac tamponade and cerebrovascular accident (CVA) or stroke, said a GNRC press release here.
