Rare surgery at city hospital

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, April 26 - A central hepatectomy, which is a difficult surgical procedure, was performed successfully by a team of doctors headed by Dr NN Das, senior consultant of the Department of HPB and Liver Transplantation of the city-based Down Town Hospital recently, said a press release here today.

The hospital statement said that a 42-year-old lady with a history of upper abdominal pain was admitted to the hospital and on evaluation and investigation she was diagnosed with hepatolithiasis (stones in the liver involving the anterior sectoral bile duct affecting segments V and VIII of the liver).

Since there is an increased incidence of cholangiocarcinoma, central hepatectomy was planned accordingly and done successfully. A central hepatectomy is a difficult surgical procedure because a central portion of the liver had to be removed and as the patient had a history of cholesystectomy 14 years back, adhesions had to be released. This is a difficult and rare surgical procedure done in the region. The patient made an uneventful recovery, the statement said.
