Rare species of ducks rescued, rehabilitated

SIVASAGAR , Sept 5 � Members of Nature�s Beckon, led by its regional coordinator Hiren Dutta recently rescued a grebe (podicepe ruhanhficollis), a rare species of duck locally known as �ghilahanh�, along with its five chicks from a villager of Thekeratal Mising gaon, Dikhowmukh and handed them over to the Forest officials.

The members of this environment activist group have been doing a yeoman�s job in protecting the flora and fauna of the region.

OnAugust 30 last, the youths of Nature�s Beckon in association with members of Dolphin Nature Club began a census of the waterbird species of openbilled storks (anustomus oscitans), or the �konuwas�, inhabiting in a large colony of a total of 638 nests, one of the largest in the State, in a small private forest belonging to a local bird lover of Dhanekhowa village on the bank of river Dikhow.

The members found altogether 1,276 storks of the particular species in the colony.

Appeciating their sincere conservation work, noted writer journalist Homen Borgohain, accompanied by poet and nature lover Dr Pronoy Phukan, Dr Nirmal Sahewalla, Dr Rita Bora and District Conservator of Forest Utpal Bora, visited Dhanekhowa village recently and were highly impressed by love and care shown to the birds by the locals. Binowa Taye, secretary of Dikhowmukh Sahitya Sabha and the members of Nature�s Beckon felicitated the noted writers and poets and thanked them for sparing their valuable time for the cause of nature conservation.
