Rare disease diagnosed at city hospital

GUWAHATI, July 3 - Doctors at the Health City Hospital here have diagnosed a rare disease called Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome.

Only three cases have been reported in India till now from the top institutes. This is the fourth such case, � and the first in Assam and the entire North East � claimed a press release issued by the hospital.

Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome is a rare genetic disease. An eight-month-old baby with severe malnutrition (weighing just like a newborn baby) and severe chest infection, anaemia, extra finger in hand and extreme feeding difficulties (all these are features of this syndrome) is being treated for the disease by Dr Yasin Ali, child specialist at the hospital.

The baby also has associated diabetes. This is the seventh case in the world to have diabetes along with Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome, the release further claimed.
