Rapido bike service suspended for not having documents

By City Correspondent

GUWAHATI, Feb 22 - The Rapido bike taxi service was suspended by the Transport Department on Saturday for not having valid documents to operate in the city.

A team of Transport Department officials carried out a raid at the Rapido office in Jonali area on Saturday and instructed the aggregator to shut down the bike taxi service in the city immediately.

The app-based bike taxi service does not have valid documents and are riding the bikes without any proper documents. The Transport Department on August 25 last year had issued a three-day notice to the bike aggregator to produce permits under which it was operating in the city. But they did not produce any documents, District Transport Officer Bapan Kalita said. When contacted, an official of the Rapido bike taxi service refused to comment.

Rapido currently operates more than 1,000 bike taxis in the city. The service had been flagged off in Guwahati by then Transport Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya. The service was launched in Shillong as well.

The Transport Department has also launched operations against app-based cab services. Organisations related to app-based cabs like Ola and Uber on Saturday met DTO Kalita and discussed various issues related to plying of cabs in the city. The issues with Ola and Uber will be solved soon, Kalita said.
