GUWAHATI, Sept 7 - AIUDF MLA Gopinath Das has been charged with raping a 14-year-old girl.
The minor was working as a maid in the house of Das, who is the AIUDF MLA from Boko Legislative Assembly constituency.
A case (Boko PS 514/15 U/s 343 of IPC) was registered at Boko Police Station in this connection today. The FIR was lodged by the father of the alleged victim, who hails from Nagarbera, Jogipara (Mandira) in Kamrup district.
Angry people who alleged police inaction in the case gheraoed the Boko Police Station today, demanding that the accused legislator be arrested immediately. The protesters also blocked NH-37 for some time. They later submitted a memorandum to the Boko Circle Officer, demanding the legislator�s arrest. The Circle Officer assured the protesters that the law would take its own course.
Attempts to contact the MLA failed as his mobile was switched off.
Reacting to the news of alleged rape of the 14-year-old girl by one of its MLAs, the AIUDF today said that �the law will take its own course�.
�Das has already spoken with news channels and clarified his position. He has stated that the allegation is false and is part of a political conspiracy against him. We have no reason not to believe him. Das has been associated with our party for a long time. He is a four-time MLA and was even a Minister earlier,� said a senior party leader.
He added, �A police case has already been filed. Let the police investigate and find out the truth. Nobody should pass judgment till all the facts come to light. We believe he is innocent.�
