TURA, June 3 A rape accused , Officer in Charge of the Ampati Police station, Nurul Islam escaped from police custody.

A report of rape was filed in the Ampati Police Station against Islam, who was accused of raping two minors in custody. The father of the minors filed a case in the Ampati Police station alleging rape by the Ofiicer in Charge when the girls were arrested from Gasura Park on March 13 on the charge of loitering in the park.

The FIR said the first rape and molestation happened on the same day by the police officer who arrested them. They were separated from the others and taken to the room of the OC where he raped them.

The FIR also stated that they were molested on several occasions by the OC when he used to go to their house in the guise of questioning. The OC visited the house again on May 31 and finding the elder sister alone, he raped her at gunpoint warning that he would kill her if she shouted or said anything about the incident.

The Nokma and NGOs of the area came to know of the incident and and along with the father of the victim went to the police station where they filed a complaint. The NGOs ASWA, AYWO, GSU Ampati, along with the people of Ampati demanded immediate arrest of the accused police officer.

They also met the Deputy Commissioner of South West Garo Hills, Ram Singh, who ordered arrest of the accused. The OC of Ampati was then taken into custody after the FIR and a medical report was ordered. Fearing for the life of the accused, the DC asked the accused to be moved to Tura Police Station.

The accused was then escorted to the Tura PS in the company of the Additional District Magistrate, Ruben Ch Momin and the Additional Deputy Commissioner, PK Boro. However, the officers got off before reaching Tura PS after which the convoy was diverted to the quarters of the accused in the Tura Police reserve. The accused, Nurul Islam took advantage of the situation and ran away.

The DC said there were four people escorting the accused to the Tura PS, but was not aware as to why the accused was taken to the police quarters.

The AYWO has asked for a judicial or a CBI enquiry on the matter and said they would not rest until the people behind the whole episode were arrested.

Agnes Kharshiing of the CSWO said that the episode smelt of foul play and asked why juniors were sent to escort a senior officer.
