GUWAHATI, June 16 - State Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that the State government has taken up an in-depth study into the relevance of having the system of top ranks in the Matric and Higher Secondary final examinations.
Addressing students at a programme organised by the Bharatiya Janata Yuba Morcha (BJYM) to felicitate the HSLC, Madrassa and HS toppers at the Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra Sarma said that the study has been taken up on the overall performance of the HS and Matric rank holders of the past five years.
So far we have found that only one-third of Matric rank holders get a position in the higher secondary final. The academic success of the rank holders in higher secondary and even in other examinations, would give new insights into the relevance of continuing with the system of ranks. No other state in the country has the system of such ranks, he added. The programme was inaugurated by Sarma. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, State BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass, Power Minister Pallab Lochan Das and others attended the programme.
The toppers were given a one-time financial assistance of Rs 8,000 each by Chief Minister Sonowal. Ninety-nine toppers were each awarded a certificate of appreciation, a packet of books and a portrait ofBharat Mata.
