By Shambhu Boro

TEZPUR, Sept 22 - Jitumoni Kalita, an educated youth of Tezpurs Kamarchuburi area has set a praiseworthy example before the directionless youths of today by setting up a farm comprising a variety of poultry and fishes at Bahumari under Phulaguri GP of Rangapara LAC in Sonitpur district. Jitumoni, a talented proletarian theatre artist, after devoting considerable time in that line, started a farm in the area to earn his livelihood. A 2005 batch Arts graduate from Tezpur College, Jitumoni worked in many private companies like Elf, ICICI, HDFC and Chola Mandalam Finance company. In its midst, he acted in a number of amateur plays like Bhogjora, Siraj, Rupalim, Torar Ati Xopun among others. He also acted in the main role in the SN Mazid directed Assamese movie Pokhilar Pakhi (Wings of Butterfly) besides acting in some short films like Sewali and the national award winning short film In a Blink (Assamese).

However, Jitumoni who always wanted to do something independently, started a farm last year with an investment of nearly ten lakh rupees with which he dug a pond in about three bighas of land area and also started piggery, duckery, poultry, goatery etc. Besides this, he is also rearing quails (locally known as bota sorai) to meet their high demand in the market. Moreover, in his farm one can witness the process of producing ducklings through the incubation process besides rearing of local fish like the climbing perch (locally popular as kawoi maas), magur and stinging catfish (locally known as singi maas) in three other small ponds and people from different areas throng his farm for getting all these items.

The hard-working youth, proudly showing this correspondent around during a recent visit to his farm said that the charm of work that he feels today, he did not find while working earlier in the previous sector where he spent a considerable amount of time. Today, I am very happy working here with a mission and my own vision. Since I have an attachment to the cultural line, I am planning to set up a theatre village here, as there are many talented people in this line here. Moreover, as the area is adjacent to Nameri national Park, Sonai Rupai and rail city Rangapara, I have a future plan of opening a resort in my farm, which will definitely, be attract both foreign and domestic tourists, Jitumoni said.

He added that many of his talented friends working in different fields outside the State on a very scanty amount of remuneration for their livelihood and he has a plan to bring back them here and engage them in his line where they would be able to work honestly establishing an example of work culture among the local youths. He was of the considered opinion that if the local youths honestly invest their time in agriculture in the acres of sprawling agricultural lands in the region, they will never have to look around for a government job. I feel if the youths of Punjab or Haryana can lead a good life by practising agriculture why not the Assamese youth? However, he also said that in this regard, the support of the government and a positive attitude of the banks is a must to attract the educated unemployed youths.
