Ramesh declares Majuli eco-sensitive zone

JORHAT, April 6 � Union Minister for Forest and Environment Jairam Ramesh today declared Majuli, the largest river island in the world as an �eco-sensitive� zone at a public meeting held at North Kamalabari Satra.

In his speech, Ramesh revealed that Central government has undertaken a project of Rs 5 crore to prevent the large-scale erosion in the river island. Rs 5 crore of the project had already been released, he informed.

The union minister further suggested to the Assam Government to submit a project for the protection and development of Majuli.

Terming Majuli and Kaziranga as the glory of the country, Ramesh said that the Central Government would never hesitate to protect them at any cost.

During his visit to Majuli, Ramesh took stock of the rich heritage of the satras, the abode of Vaishnavite culture. He stressed building Majuli as one of the prime tourist hotspots in the country.

Assam forest and tourism minister, Rockybul Hussain accompanied the Union Minister during his visit to Majuli.

The forest division of Jorhat district prepared a canvas of the landscape of the river island to inform the Union Minister about the infrastructure, geographical location, environment and the satriya culture of Majuli.
