GUWAHATI, June 8 � Distinguished educationist and social worker Ramcharan Das passed away this afternoon at the Gauhati Medical College Hospital. Das, aged 90, was suffering from old-age ailments, according to his family.
Married to academic and singer Lakshahira Das, the publicity- shy Das had a long and illustrious life leaving a mark in several areas such as academics, welfare of children, and social work after being educated in reputed institutions of the country.
Born on August 30, 1919 at Barpeta, Das attended Barpeta Government High School and Cotton College. He had higher education in Calcutta University and Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Bombay. He was the founder head of the Department of Anthropology, Arya Vidyapeeth College and was responsible for grooming a number of students who acknowledge his success as a teacher.
The Department of Anthropology, Arya Vidyapeeth College, termed his death a great loss to the institution as well as to anthropological research in the region. He was a keen promoter of anthropological studies, and was among those who encouraged young students to understand the importance of field work and research methodology.
Apart from his established academic credentials, Das contributed his knowledge and skills to support the marginalized and the poor. Former Chief Minister Sarat Chandra Sinha once described Das as a person inspired by Gandhian ideology, which he imbibed from a number of freedom fighters of his time.
A well travelled man, who had academic associates in well-known institutions across the world, he had visited England, Scotland, Thailand and Malaysia, among other places. In his quiet moments, the late Das also made paintings.
Late Das leaves behind his wife, three sons and daughters-in-law, and seven grandchildren. His mortal remains were consigned to the flames at the Nabagraha cremation ground in the evening. Messages of condolence have come in from a number of individuals and organisations, including Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust, All Assam Student�s Union and the Uttar Pub Bharat Haridev Sangha.
