Ramailo Tihar observed at Orang

UDALGURI, Dec 6 � The sixth edition of Ramailo Tihar, a traditional festival of the Nepali-speaking Gorkhas, was celebrated with a two-day programme on the Orang Laxmi Mandir premises recently.

Organised by the Orang primary committee of the All Assam Gorkha Students� Union (AAGSU), the festivities drew the attention of thousands of people from all walks of life. The first day of the programme was spent with flag hoisting, tributes to the martyrs, competitions on Deusi, Bhaili, Sangini and Maruni dances while the second day had special cultural programme and an open session. The open session chaired by Drona Prasad Chapagain, president of the celebration committee was attended by Hari Gajurel, a popular Nepali litterateur of Assam, Jagadish Khanal, president of All Assam Gorkha Students� Union (AAGSU) among many others on the dais as chief guest and appointed speaker respectively.

Speaking on the occasion as appointed speaker, Jagadish Khanal, newly elected president of the Gorkha students� organisation of the State said that Assam should be a land of peace in the days to come and keeping this point in view, he appealed to various insurgent groups of the State to sit in parley with the Government as dialogue could be instrumental to bring an end of problems and hurdles faced by ethnic linguistic groups of the State which, if turned positive, could herald a peaceful atmosphere.

In the cultural show held recently, celebrated singers like Milan Newar, Krishna Mizar and Tilak Newar and local artistes enthralled the spectators.
