Rally demands end to paper mill crisis

JAGIROAD, April 27 - A protest rally by the citizens of the district was organised today in front of the Nagaon Paper Mill here under the banner of Kagaj Kol Suraksha Manch and the Kagaj Nigam Karmi Union to adopt resolutions on the present conditions plaguing the two HPC mills of Assam, viz the Nagaon Paper Mill at Jagiroad and the Cachar Paper Mill at Panchgram.

The protest rally in its first resolution expressed strong resentment over the failure of the Government to revive the two integrated units of the HPCL. Considering the move to be reflective of the Centre�s anti-Assam attitude, the resolution demanded immediate revitalisation and revival of the two projects.

In its second resolution, the protest rally opposed what it called conspiracy by a racket to privatise the two mills.

In yet another resolution, the rally opposed the move by the management to release the workers formally engaged in the units forcefully and demanded withdrawal of any such order in this connection which might deprive them of their dues.

Further, the rally pressed for appointment of suitable indigenous unemployed youths against each of the employees who may opt for voluntary retirement, as per the latest policy of the management.

In its fifth resolution, the rally demanded release of all financial dues to the employees of the mills by the management. It also resolved to send a representative body of the agitating groups to New Delhi for apprising the Centre on the issues.

The meeting decided to organise a �Dispur Chalo� programme and mooted an economic blockade in the coming days to press upon the powers that be for solution of the crisis plaguing the HPC mills.

The rally was presided over by Rimal Amsih, president of Sadou Tribal Youth League in which Aditya Khaklary, secretary general of All Assam Tribal Sangha, Atanu Sarma of Asom Unnati Sabha, Pramod Boro, president of Nikhil Boro Students� Union, Dipak Mosrong, president of ATSU, Ananda Bordoloi, general secretary of KNKU, Bubul Das, former Jagiroad MLA, Manabendra Chakraborty, president of CPM Workers� Union, Lalit Pashani, president of Morigaon unit of AJYCP, Abanti Bora, organising secretary of AASU, among others, were present.
