Rallies, meetings held in various parts of 4-Dhubri HPC

By Correspondent

GAURIPUR, April 21 - As the campaign for third phase of LS polls ended this evening, almost all the candidates organised rallies and meetings in different areas of the Dhubri constituency to woo the voters.

Today, the BJP alliance arranged a meeting at the historic Mahamaya playground at Gauripur and a number of star campaigners including Ranjit Dass, president, State BJP, Ranjit Dutta, Minister for Welfare of Minorities, Biswajit Daimari of the BPF took part and called upon the people to vote for the BJP alliance candidate Zabed Islam.

In 2014 out of 15,47,868 voters, 13,63,813 voters exercised their franchise. Badaruddin Ajmal of AIUDF got 5,92,569 votes while the Congress candidate Wazed Ali Chaudhury got 3,62,839 votes. Debamay Sanyal of BJP was able to receive only 2,98,985 votes and Anowar Hussain of AGP was in fourth position by securing only 9897 votes.

It was observed that the parties contesting for the seat were not able to campaign in the remote rural areas of the constituency dominated by the religious minority voters. They were seen campaigning only in town areas where there is no wave this time. Badaruddin Ajmal, a two-time MP from the constituency has a strong footing in the minority pockets and the voters of these areas are said to be his strong supporters. Moreover, a rumour has been floating around that the Congress candidate Abu Taher Bepari is a close associate of BJP star campaigner Himanta Biswa Sarma and therefore he may join the BJP if he is voted to power. But Bepari lagged behind in campaigning.

Keen observers feel that the regional party has already lost its credibility and the literate voters may not vote for the candidate as the party has betrayed the Assamese people for its self-interest.

Nurul Islam Chaudhury, TMC candidate seems to be the main rival for both the AIUDF and Congress candidates. Though the partys organisational base is not so strong, yet Chaudhury may be able to divide the minority votes.

Considering the ground situation, the prospect of the BJP alliance candidate is not at all bright and therefore, Zabed Islam may face a hard battle this time.
