Rallies in Garo Hills against admission norms

By Correspondent

TURA, June 9 Thousands of students from across the Garo Hills today came out in a protest rally against the new norms for admission into various colleges of Garo Hills.

The new norms affect admissions into Class XI and general degree courses as the semester system calls for adequate infrastructure and proper educationists. Most colleges have withdrawn their Class XI sections in anticipation of the changed norms as the implementation would need the requisite infrastructure.

While most welcomed the UGC norms of semester system in education, the protestors questioned its implementation within the necessary infrastructure to support the students.

The protestors, led by the Garo Students Union, rallied through the towns of Tura, Williamnagar and Resubelpara before ending at the office of the DC of the various districts. Other NGOs, including the AYWO, AAYF, GHSMC, CSWO, NESO, amongst others, also too took part in the rally so that the students may be able to pursue further education.

Angry protestors in Williamnagar ensured the government college did not open while also burning the effigy of Education Minister RC Laloo. We are not against the semester system, but its implementation without the necessary infrastructure is what irks us, he added.
