IMPHAL, June 17 - Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has assured that the Centre will extend necessary flood assistance for the affected people of Manipur. The assurance was conveyed to State Chief Minister N Biren Singh during a telephonic talk.
The Home Minister also asked Biren Singh to extend immediate flood assistance to the flood victims of the State. Disclosing this to the media here during a visit to flood-affected Maiba-khun and Mongjam in Imphal East district on Sunday, the Chief Minister said that Union Home Minister also informed that they will make necessary arrangements within the next two/three days.
For the long term plan to tackle flood in the State, the Centre has agreed to send a team very soon, Biren Singh added.
Manipur Government has already released Rs 3.2 crore for immediate use in providing relief materials to the affected people. The State Government has also announced ex-gratia to the families of those who lost their lives during the flood.
The flood has so far affected about 1.92 lakh population in 360 villages under nine out of the State�s 16 districts. It has claimed seven lives, according to State Department of Relief and Disaster Management. The flood has also damaged 24,849 houses. As of Saturday, 58,524 people are taking shelter in 180 relief camps.
Chief Minister Biren Singh also inspected the relief camps at Maiba Khul Primary School and Mongjam Mamang Leikai.
He stated that he couldn�t attend the NITI Aayog meeting in Delhi due to the current flash flood in the State. He said that the government is trying its best to control the situation.
Meanwhile, Consumers Affairs and Public Distribution Minister Karam Shyam inspected the flood hit areas after completion of repair of breached Imphal riverbank at Chajing-karam in Imphal West district.
