GUWAHATI, Jan 2 - Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and the leadership of the All Assam Students Union will make a joint visit to the Indo-Bangladesh border on January 3 and 4.

The Centre today formally invited the student body for this long-overdue border visit.

The team would visit the Karimganj sector of the border tomorrow and the Dhubri sector on January 4.

Apart from Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent) for Sports and Youth Affairs, Sarbananda Sonowal and other senior officials of the MHA would be in the team, while the AASU will be represented by its president Dipanka Kumar Nath, general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi and chief adviser Dr Samujjal Bhattacharyya.

The Assam Accord was signed after 6 years of rigorous struggle, but even after 30 years since the signing of the Accord, the Indo-Bangladesh border has remained porous. In August last year, the Union Home Minister had promised to hold a joint border visit and discuss the implementation of the Assam Accord, a statement from the AASU said.

PTI adds: During the visit tomorrow, the Home Minister will attend a public meeting at Ramakrishna Nagar in the Karimganj sector. He will then visit the Sonahat border outpost in Dhubri on Monday and attend a public meeting at Bishkhowa.

The Home Minister will also hold a meeting with some prominent persons of Assam in Guwahati tomorrow evening. He will also visit Shilpgram here.
