GUWAHATI, Jan 11 - With one member after another quitting the high-level committee formed by the Centre for implementing Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, the efficacy of the panel has come under cloud.
While litterateurs and former presidents of Asam Sahitya Sabha, Dr Nagen Saikia and Rong Bong Terang, refused to be a part of the panel on Thursday, educationist Mukunda Rajbongshi pulled out of the panel today, terming the exercise �futile and unnecessary� as the Assam Accord itself was sought to be negated by the Centre by bringing in the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
The All Assam Students� Union (AASU) � one of the signatories to the Assam Accord � had made clear its decision not to be a part of the committee at the very beginning.
Meanwhile, veteran journalist DN Bezboruah, the only remaining member drawn from among intellectuals, today said that he would continue to be a panel member for �telling the Government some harsh words�.
�I am not surprised that the members are resigning as the committee is going to serve very little purpose. Initially, I too thought of resigning, but decided to stay as a member because I need to tell the Government some unkind words on the issue. Someone has to do that. And I will do that in my capacity as a member of the panel,� he said.
The committee is headed by retired bureaucrat MP Bezbaruah and the remaining members include MHA Joint Secretary Satyendra Garg, Advocate General of Assam Ramesh Borpatra Gohain and retired bureaucrat Subhas Das, besides DN Bezboruah.
